Dominique Zinkpė Benin, b. 1969
Dominique Zinkpè is a Beninese artist whose multidisciplinary practice features painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, and performance.
Emerging in the 1990s as part of a generation that redefined contemporary art in Benin, his work probes the psychological, spiritual, and social dimensions of human experience. Through a visual language that is both playful and unsettling, Zinkpè constructs symbolic worlds populated by hybrid figures, masks, and fragmented bodies that reflect both personal introspection and collective memory.
Trained at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, Zinkpè developed an approach rooted in experimentation and material freedom. Recurring motifs such as exaggerated limbs, staring eyes, and totemic forms draw from local cosmologies, oral traditions and the performative aspects of West African cultural life, while remaining open to broader global dialogues on identity and transformation. Zinkpè’s work frequently navigates the tension between the visible and the invisible, engaging themes of the subconscious.
In addition to his studio practice, Zinkpè has played a significant role in shaping the contemporary art scene in Benin, notably through the founding of Unik, a residency for young Beninese artists. In 2015, he took over the direction of the Arts and Culture Center of Lobozunkpa in Cotonou.
